what Frank is listening to #10 – ERIC CARMEN – Tonight You're Mine – ( Arista) – 1980
I had reservations about this album as it's a "late" Eric Carmen LP
The sleeve picture alone is very well dodgy … it would have the feminists amongst you up in arms. What's he doing to the poor girl ? The name of the album is "Tonight you're Mine" … is he going to do her "doggy style" or fuck her up the ass?
Maybe the song titles could shed some light on the question:
"It Hurts Too Much"
"Lost In The Shuffle"
"All For Love"
"Tonight You're Mine"
"Sleep With Me"
"Inside Story"
"Foolin' Myself"
"You Need Some Lovin'"
"Lost In The Shuffle"
"All For Love"
"Tonight You're Mine"
"Sleep With Me"
"Inside Story"
"Foolin' Myself"
"You Need Some Lovin'"
every track a pun … or double entendre?
Carmen was a true talent with The Raspberries. They really kept power pop and Beatles melodies alive in the 70s and, they in turn, were pretty influential. The Knack, Cheap Trick (one of the finest bands of the late 70s) come to mind. His early stuff is also solid especially for Beatles lovers – The Raspberries and Carmen provide a alternate universe look at what the Beatles would have been doing if they hadn't discovered drugs, split up and decided to experiment musically ( I would be surprised if our friend Phil would disagree).
Admittedly there is more McCartney than Lennon/George/Ringo but on this album but the Beatles "channelling" is pretty low. There are quite a few "power ballads" and over the top rockers but nothing really good. Carmen did write all the tracks himself, if that counts for anything.
Session musos include: Davey Johnstone (Elton John, Rod Stewart), Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge, Cactus), Kenny Passarelli (Hall & Oates, Joe Walsh) and David Woodford (Bonnie Raitt, Aerosmith).
The best of a bad batch:
"Lost in the Shuffle" is a listenable quasi rockabilly track
"It hurts too Much" has Phil Spector-ish opera and pacing .
I'll be selling this one off.
here are some Raspberries
