what Frank is listening to #17 – EDDIE MONEY – No Control – (CBS) – 1982
I have heard Eddie before and never been impressed … he plays the MOR AOR (middle of the road, audults oriented rock) that was so popular in the mid to late 1970s through to the late 1980s. There is nothing offensive about it really, its just sort of bland, without much originality … it's all slick hard(er) rock and big power ballads, full of fake angst and pithy observations. The type of thing you heard on umpteen million teen film soundtracks of the 1980s … (and revived for Team America … think "Freedom Isn't Free"). He was also a early MTV favourite (his video clips aren't actually to bad … unlike a lot of others in his genre he seemed to take the mickey out of himself a bit)
But if you are making $, then why change…ehhh? There were three singles off this album: "No Control", "Shakin", and "Think I'm in Love" … the last 2 were Top 10 "Mainstream Rock" hits (#60, #9, #1 US) and the album went platinum (#20US)… go figure.
I didn't expect much more from Eddie Maloney, a cop from Brooklyn … as I have said I had heard some of his stuff before (though oddly enough I don't remember any of this LP from the early 80s) … but now I'm looking for a diamond in the rough, which ultimately is elusive …. none of the singles impress me that much, though "Shakin" and "Think I'm in Love" are bearable (in fact they are probably the best things on the album) also "My Friend My Friends", though overproduced, is an okay ballad.
The producer, Tom Dowd, is a bit of a legend though … he was at Atlantic for years and early in his career worked on (as an engineer) Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane, the Modern Jazz Quartet and Ray Charles sessions etc and then later as a producer with Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Chicago, Meatloaf yadda yadda … but here, so what … a producer can only do so much.
Eddie still plays pubs and clubs in the US
The singles clips can be found here:
they are mildly amusing and certainly no more offensive than the wave of fake punk bands out now.
I'll be selling this one … any Eddie Money fans out there ?
What's worse I think I have another Eddie Money LP in the pile somewhere.
